Kannur (Kerala) | Multiple incidents of violence were reported in various parts of the Taliparamba constituency here, with a CPI(M) worker allegedly stabbed and Congress-led UDF workers attacked after the Assembly election polling concluded on Thursday night, police said.

In Taliparamba, CPI(M) rebel leader T K Govindan is contesting as an Independent candidate with UDF support.

According to officials at Mayyil police station, a CPI(M) worker identified as Prakashan P (50), a native of Kuttichira in Kayaralam, was allegedly stabbed outside the Mulakkody UP School polling station at around 7 pm.

Police have registered a case of attempt to murder against a UDF activist identified as Krishnan.

Prakashan was admitted to a hospital and his condition is stated to be stable, police said.

CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan and party district leaders visited the hospital and alleged that the attack was carried out out of fear of defeat.

Meanwhile, Mayyil police have also registered a case against six CPI(M) activists, including Prakashan, for allegedly attacking two UDF workers - Bhaskaran P (56) and Shyju K V (46) - at the same school compound.

According to police, both UDF activists sustained injuries after being attacked with stones.

In another incident, a case was registered against 15 CPI(M) activists for allegedly trespassing into the house of a woman and threatening to kill her and her family at Mullakodi around 9.30 pm.

As per the FIR, the group damaged furniture and household items and vandalised a scooter parked in front of the house.

Police also registered a case against two UDF workers for allegedly attacking a CPI(M) worker, Venugopalan K of Mepparamba, near Malappattam in Kannur.

Police said a detailed probe is underway in the four cases related to post-poll violence and that the accused will be arrested soon.

Govindan is contesting against P K Shyamala, wife of CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan, in the Taliparamba constituency, which is considered a stronghold of the Left party.
