MP HC dismisses defamation case against Rahul Gandhi after he expresses regret

Jabalpur | A day after Rahul Gandhi expressed regret over a statement targeting Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's son Kartikeya Singh, the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday dismissed a defamation case filed against the Congress leader.

Gandhi, who had moved the Jabalpur bench of the high court seeking to quash the case, expressed regret in writing on Wednesday stating that he had mistakenly referred to Kartikeya Singh in his speech.

Singh accepted the regret, and agreed to the dismissal of the case he had filed against Gandhi in the Bhopal court for MPs and MLAs.

The High Court then issued an order dismissing the case.

In his written statement submitted to the high court, Gandhi stated that he had mistakenly named the complainant while talking about the Panama Papers leak scandal, for which he publicly expressed regret the very next day.

He intended to mention the son of a former Chhattisgarh chief minister, he said.

Kartikeya Singh's complaint before the Bhopal court alleged that Gandhi mentioned his name while referring to the Panama Papers leaks at an election rally in Jhabua in 2018, thereby tarnishing his reputation.
