3 cops injured in attack by drug accused at police station in Kochi

Three policemen suffered serious injuries after they were allegedly attacked by a man who was arrested with drugs at Maradu station here

Kochi | Three policemen suffered serious injuries after they were allegedly attacked by a man who was arrested with drugs at Maradu station here, officials said on Saturday.

The injured were Civil Police Officer Fasal PM, Assistant Sub Inspector Sumeshkumar K and Sub Inspector Jackson K.

They were allegedly attacked by Renjith (32) of Kuthiyathodu in Alappuzha on Friday night, officials said.

Police said Fasal suffered fractures to his right hand, while Sumeshkumar suffered a dislocated elbow and Jackson sustained a severe neck injury.

Officials said Renjith was arrested with a small quantity of MDMA in Vyttila on Friday night.

After being brought to the Maradu police station, Renjith allegedly turned violent, police said.

As police tried to restrain him, Renjith, who is a boxer and trained in martial arts, attacked the officials, they said.

With the help of additional police personnel, Renjith was overpowered and shifted to a cell at the Ernakulam Medical College Hospital in Kalamassery.

The injured police officials were shifted to a hospital for treatment.

Police suspect that Renjith may have attacked the officials while under the influence of drugs.

Apart from the drug seizure case, a separate case was registered against Renjith for allegedly assaulting police officers, police added.
