Ramanagara | second-in-command and two-time chief minister H D Kumaraswamy won the Channapatna seat in Karnataka's Ramanagara district for the sixth time on Saturday.
Kumaraswamy received 96,592 votes against 80,677 polled by his BJP rival C P Yogeshwar. Congress candidate Gangadhar S finished third with 15,374 votes, according to the Election Commission website.
Kumaraswamy had also contested elections from Channapatna, known for wooden toys, instead of Ramanagara in 2018 against local strongman Yogeshwara. The JD(S) leader won by a margin of 21,530 votes.
Yogeshwara has represented the constituency five times since 1999 as an Independent, and as a candidate of Congress, BJP and Samajwadi Party.
Both Yogeshwara and Kumaraswamy belong to the dominant Vokkaliga community in the region.
Kumaraswamy, who entered politics in 1996, has won Lok Sabha elections twice and assembly polls five times.
Ramanagara | JD(S) leader and former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy's son Nilkil on Saturday faced defeat in the party bastion of Ramanagaram, losing the seat to the Congress by 10,715 votes.
Anitha Kumaraswamy, the wife of H D Kumaraswamy, is the outgoing MLA of the Ramanagaram segment.
Nearly three decades after Ramanagaram propelled H D Deve Gowda to the post of chief minister, his grandson Nikhil Kumaraswamy tested the waters here following his disastrous electoral debut in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
He had lost to BJP-backed Independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh in the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency by 1,25,876 votes.
Nikil got 76,975 votes, while Congress candidate H A Iqbal Hussain bagged 87,690 votes. BJP candidate Gautam Marilingegowda was in third place with 12,912 votes, according to the Election Commission website.
