Dehradun | Four people, including two women, were killed after their car fell into a deep gorge in the Jharipani area on Mussoorie Road on Wednesday morning, police said.

According to the police, the accident occurred around 9.15 am on the Jharipani-Kolukhet route when the victims were were returning from Uttarkashi in a car (Maruti Celerio).

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle had briefly stopped near a local shop, where one of the passengers purchased some items. The vehicle went out of control and rolled down the steep hillside into the gorge immediately after it was restarted, they said.

Upon receiving information from the Dehradun District Control Room, the local police, State Disaster Response Force, Fire Service and the 108 Ambulance service launched a joint rescue operation.

All four victims died on the spot, the police said. The deceased, Satyaprakash, was a resident of Haryana's Sonipat, Manit and Savita were from Ghaziabad, and Sangeeta from Delhi, police said.

Rescue teams have retrieved one body and sent it to a nearby hospital, while operations continue to recover the remaining bodies from the gorge, a police officer said.

The families of the victims have been informed, and further legal proceedings will follow once the recovery operation concludes, the officer added.
