Mumbai | The Mumbai Kerala Muslim Jamaat has submitted a petition to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw demanding action against passengers including Malayalees being victims of theft on Konkan route even in long distance trains.
Even last day, a family from Guruvayur was robbed at Ratnagiri, while traveling from Thrissur to Mumbai. The family lost jewelry worth two and a half lakh rupees.
Jamaat president Kader Haji and general secretary K P Moithunni said that it was disappointing that the railways did not take action even when such series of thefts were repeated.
The Jamaat leaders said that they should take necessary measures for the safety of the passengers, otherwise they will plan strike programs with the inclusion of other expatriate organizations.
There have been many theft cases on the Konkan route in the last few months.
On the other hand, journalist C B Sathyan said that the railway authorities should take necessary steps to prevent theft in trains and for this purpose more CCTV systems should be used.
"Thefts are very high on trains to Kerala. Most of the thefts happen at night. It should be checked whether such groups also get the help of temporary train employees. Installing at least one CCTV camera at the door in all coaches can reduce crime to some extent. It would also be good to have RPF patrolling all coaches at night, especially between 12pm and 4am. Strict implementation of CCTV cameras and patrolling can stop theft to some extent," he said.
