MUMBAI: The mesmerizing tradition of Onampookalam continues to grace Panvel Railway Station (Central Railway) on Thiruvona day, delighting commuters and onlookers alike. The Kerala Cultural Society (KCS) has once again brought to life the vibrant floral display after fifteen years of consistent dedication. The unveiling of this year's enchanting creation took place at 09:30 am on Tuesday, Thiruvona day, captivating the public's attention.
This annual spectacle, known for its elaborate flower arrangements, has not only become a cherished tradition but also an emblem of unity and culture. Originating at Panvel, the floral artistry has since flourished, adorning various railway stations throughout Mumbai.
The meticulous preparation of the massive sixty-foot flower garden commenced at 8 o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, three days prior to Thiruvona day. Over the span of 72 hours, a team of dedicated individuals crafted this exquisite display using an assortment of flowers, totaling a staggering one and a half tons in weight.
Under the leadership of KCS President Manoj Kumar MS, Vice President Prabhakaran KB, Secretary Murali K. Nair, and other committee members, along with a group of enthusiastic Malayali friends, the flower bed came to life. Notable participants included Benoy Mathew, Jacob George, Madanan, Achankunjy Daniel, and numerous others who contributed their efforts to make this vibrant spectacle a reality.
The ceremonial inauguration of the flower garden was graced by Panvel Railway Station Manager Biju V. John, Head Treasury Officer Suresh Babu, RPF Inspector Prahlad Singh, and other esteemed guests. Amid the presence of thousands of passengers and various social, cultural, and organizational figures, the lighting of the Bhadradeepam marked the commencement of the enchanting display.
KCS President Manoj highlighted the essence of this tradition, noting its role in fostering unity and celebrating the shared culture of the Malayali community. This year's Onapukalam carried a special dedication to the distressed populations of Maharashtra and Kerala, reflecting a message of solidarity in trying times.
