Renowned public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, famed for his role in high-profile terror cases, now steps into politics as the BJP candidate for Mumbai North Central. In this interview, Nikam discusses key national issues like the Uniform Civil Code, national security, and economic infrastructure, along with his plans to address local challenges in Mumbai, including slum rehabilitation, illegal activities, and infrastructure development.

Q

What are three key national issues according to you?

A

All the issues mentioned in our Sankalp Patra are key issues. However, according to me, the following three are particularly important:

First, the Uniform Civil Code is essential

It is a principle of state policy listed in Article 44 of the Constitution. The BJP believes that true gender equality cannot be achieved until Bharat adopts a Uniform Civil Code to protect the rights of all women. This is a stand we are committed to, drawing upon the best traditions and harmonizing them with modern times.

Second, national security has been a significant focus during the last ten years of the Modi government

Unlike the previous Congress administration, there have been no major terrorist incidents in the nation. We have maintained a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, cracking down on Naxalites, and taking firm actions such as the Surgical Strikes of 2016 and the Air Strikes of 2019. Additionally, we have corrected the previous neglect of border infrastructure by constructing roads, railways, telecom towers, optical fiber cables, and electricity networks. We will continue to enhance this infrastructure and strengthen our paramilitary forces with advanced equipment and training to eliminate Left Wing Extremism in all its forms.

Third, the economy and infrastructure are pivotal areas where we have made significant progress

Under the Modi government, India’s economy has risen from the 11th to the 5th largest in the world, and we aim to become the 3rd largest economy. We have transformed infrastructure over the past decade, significantly increasing the pace of national highway construction and adding thousands of kilometers of railway tracks annually. We are also redeveloping over 1,300 railway stations to world-class standards and expanding metro networks in over 20 cities to ensure last-mile connectivity.

Q

What prominent issues do you observe in your constituency and Mumbai? How are you planning to resolve them?

A

I would address both questions together.

One of the major issues in my constituency and Mumbai is the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects

The city is undergoing significant upgrades, aiming for a slum-free Mumbai. However, there are anti-development elements opposing these projects. My resolve is to ensure everyone gets a home of their dreams, addressing the root problems wherever projects are stuck and preventing any political misguidance.

Illegal activities are another concern

I will not tolerate unlawful activities such as illegal encroachments, constructions, and crimes. I will ensure justice for all, working closely with Mumbai police and leveraging my legal background to uphold the rule of law. Citizens will find me easily accessible and committed to addressing their issues.

Finally, building infrastructure in Mumbai is a priority

The previous Congress governments lacked vision for Mumbai’s infrastructure. In the last ten years, the Modi government has taken multiple steps to transform Mumbai. In my constituency, key projects like the Bandra-Versova Sea Link, Metro 2-B, and Metro-3 will reduce commute times and alleviate traffic on the Western Express Highway. Additionally, Mumbai’s overall infrastructure is being upgraded with projects like the MTHL and coastal roads, enhancing connectivity and quality of life for Mumbaikars. We aim to decongest the city swiftly, ensuring that citizens can reach their families quickly and enjoy a higher quality of life.
