Mumbai | As many as 79 Lord Ganesh idols were immersed until noon on Tuesday in Mumbai on the first immersion day of the 12-day festival, which began a day earlier.

No untoward incident was reported during the early immersions, according to civic officials.

The civic body has made arrangements at immersion sites, including artificial ponds and major natural immersion locations.

According to figures shared by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, the immersions included three idols of public Ganesh mandals and 71 household idols. Five Hartalika (goddess) idols were also immersed, taking the total number of immersions recorded till noon to 79.

According to different traditions, idols of Lord Ganesh are immersed one-and-a-half days and five days after they are consecrated. The festival will culminate on Anant Chaturdashi, which falls on September 25 this year, when idols will be immersed in water bodies after taking out processions
