Thiruvananthapuram | Heavy summer rain accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Kerala, particularly high-range regions, causing widespread damage to houses, roads and power infrastructure, authorities said on Wednesday.
Uprooted trees and downed power lines disrupted daily life across various districts, cutting off electricity and bringing traffic to a standstill.
Sea erosion and lightning-related incidents also added to the destruction in different parts of the state.
In Thiruvananthapuram district, severe sea erosion was reported from Pozhiyoor, where rough sea conditions damaged roads and inundated several houses.
In Kollam district, lightning struck a house in Punalur, damaging its second floor.
Ernakulam district witnessed extensive damage due to heavy rain and gusty winds, with around 10 houses partially damaged across various taluks, especially in Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha and Tripunithura.
Officials said four houses were partially damaged in Kothamangalam taluk, while two houses each suffered damage in Muvattupuzha taluk, Kochi city limits and Tripunithura.
Tree branches fell on a car parked near the Tripunithura Metro station amid strong winds, they said.
In Muvattupuzha taluk's Velloorkunnam village, a tree uprooted by strong winds fell on the road disrupting traffic for some time. Fire and Rescue Services personnel later removed the tree and restored traffic movement, district authorities said.
Authorities also reported that the roof of a vehicle showroom building in Muvattupuzha collapsed during the rain and winds, damaging several cars parked there.
Officials cautioned that adverse weather conditions were likely to continue in the coming days and urged people to remain vigilant.
They also advised against night travel to high-range areas in view of possible landslides and asked residents to stay indoors during lightning, avoiding open spaces and tall trees.
