Thiruvananthapuram | Former DGP and BJP Corporation councillor R Sreelekha on Saturday accused the UDF government in Keralam of "double standards" over the registration of a case against her for her alleged remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
In a Facebook post, she alleged that the police treated complaints against Prime Minister Narendra Modi differently from those against Gandhi.
"If someone makes derogatory remarks against the Prime Minister, it is a defamation case that the police cannot register on their own. But if a complaint is received alleging that something was said about Rahul Gandhi, a criminal case for inciting a riot is registered!," she said.
The state police on Friday registered a case against Sreelekha over her remarks against Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi at Punalur.
At a recent party event in Punalur, Sreelekha criticised Gandhi's protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and likened his actions to those of a person under the influence of drugs.
Her remarks drew widespread criticism from Congress leaders, including state Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala.
A Congress leader had filed a complaint with the police on Wednesday, following which a case was registered at Punalur police station, officials said.
The case was registered under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause a riot, they said.
Sreelekha was the first woman IPS officer from Keralam and retired as DGP before joining the BJP.
She won the local body election from the Sasthamangalam ward of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation last year. However, she lost the Assembly election from the Vatiyoorkavu constituency as a BJP candidate in April this year.
