Kozhikode (Kerala) | A 46-year-old man who had undergone treatment for a kidney stone at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital has died, with his family alleging medical negligence and unauthorised surgeries.
Rejith, a resident of Parappuppara in Vanimel, died early on Thursday while on ventilator support after spending the past week at the hospital.
According to his relatives, Rejith first underwent surgery in August 2025 to remove a kidney stone at the Medical College Hospital.
The family alleges that the surgery, which was intended to be performed on the left kidney, was mistakenly carried out on the right side.
They claim that Rejith later developed swelling and infection and that his condition worsened despite treatment.
The relatives further alleged that doctors advised another surgery in April this year and that an additional procedure was carried out without their consent.
They also claimed that they had paid Rs 5,000 to a doctor after becoming concerned that the patient was not receiving adequate attention.
According to the family, doctors at a private hospital where Rejith was later taken informed them that an injury sustained during surgery had caused the infection and that surgeries on both sides of the body had been unnecessary.
Government Medical College authorities rejected the allegations of medical negligence, stating that Rejith suffered from a highly complex kidney disease and that his treatment involved considerable risks.
Three days before his death, the family submitted complaints alleging medical negligence to the Medical College Superintendent and the Medical College Police.
The death triggered protests by relatives and local BJP leaders, who demanded a high-level investigation into the allegations of medical negligence and bribery.
The family has alleged that a surgery intended to remove a stone from the patient's left kidney was performed on the right kidney and that another surgery was later conducted without consent.
