Kannur (Kerala) | KPCC president Sunny Joseph said on Monday that there is no internal debate in the Congress in Kerala over the chief ministerial candidate, and that the decision will be made by the AICC.

Speaking to reporters, Joseph said he was grateful that people believed there would be a Congress chief minister in the state after the election results are announced.

The Assembly election for the 140 constituencies was held on April 9, and the results will be declared on May 4.

"There is a proper method in Congress for selecting the CM. After the election results are announced, the AICC will make a decision and present it to the public. It will then be approved by the Congress workers and the public," he said.

His comments came at a time when various leaders have expressed support for V D Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala, and K C Venugopal as potential chief ministerial candidates if the UDF comes to power.

Senior Congress leader V M Sudheeran said the debate over the chief ministerial candidate is irrelevant at this time.

"This is not the first time Congress is poised to win an election and come to power. The party has a traditional method of selecting the Chief Minister. According to this process, opinions from the state unit will be considered and evaluated by the party high command, after which a decision will be made," he said.

Meanwhile, K Muraleedharan, who contested the election from the Vattiyoorkavu seat in Thiruvananthapuram, said he was not interested in such debates.

Asked about promotional campaigns by some Congress leaders aimed at drawing the attention of the party high command, Muraleedharan said he viewed them as efforts to keep people entertained.

"During this lull, people should shake off the dull mood. With no fireworks at Thrissur Pooram this time, some may have chosen to create a few 'fireworks' of their own-but they won't cross the line," he said.
