Thiruvananthapuram | The Keralam government is preparing to introduce legislation in the upcoming Assembly session to provide a legal guarantee for the care and protection of senior citizens, Chief Minister V D Satheesan said on Friday, expressing hope that the bill would be passed this month.
The proposed legislation aims to ensure that elderly people receive the care and support they need amid changing demographic patterns, rising life expectancy and concerns over the neglect of senior citizens in some households, he told PTI Videos during an interview.
"We are preparing legislation to provide a legal guarantee to senior citizens that they will be protected and that somebody will be there to take care of them," Satheesan said, ahead of the commencement of the Assembly session on Monday.
The proposed law would seek to ensure that the needs of senior citizens are monitored, including whether they have had their breakfast, lunch and dinner and whether they require palliative care, he said.
The government has already prepared the legislation, which is awaiting clearance from the Law Department, and hopes to pass it during the upcoming Assembly session, he added.
"We are going to start our Assembly session on October 12. I hope we can pass the legislation this month itself," Satheesan said.
