Kochi | A Keralam court has convicted and sentenced to life a former bus conductor for murdering a 37-year-old woman, with whom he was in a relationship, back in 2016 for her gold ornaments, police said.
Ernakulam Additional District and Sessions Court judge Kavitha Gangadharan sentenced the accused -- Anwar -- to life imprisonment for the offence of murder under the IPC.
Besides that, the court also sentenced him to varying jail terms for the offences of robbery, robbery with attempt to cause death and destruction of evidence under the IPC for a total of 20 years.
However, as the sentences will run concurrently, the accused will have to serve the life sentence, public prosecutor P A Bindu said.
In March 2016, then 27-year-old bus conductor Anwar killed 37-year-old Sandhya near the Thoppumpady BOT bridge area on Willingdon Island here, police said.
According to the police, the accused killed her following an argument over her pressuring him to marry her and her refusal to give him the money he had demanded.
The accused had allegedly earlier swindled gold from another woman under the pretext of love and wanted money to pay her back, police said.
After choking Sandhya to death, he stole 12 sovereigns of gold ornaments that she was wearing, it said.
