Thrissur (Kerala) | Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Friday said that the government would strengthen security in prisons by deploying modern drone surveillance systems, asserting that jails would now be monitored "from the sky" as well.
In a Facebook post after visiting Viyyur Central Jail, Chennithala said he inspected the newly introduced drone-based surveillance system aimed at enhancing prison security.
He also shared videos reviewing drones deployed at the jail.
He said incidents of narcotic substances being thrown into prisons, including Kannur Central Jail, had become widespread over the past decade and recalled that even notorious criminals had escaped from prisons in the past.
"From now on, prisons will not be watched only from the four sides. There will also be an eye in the sky," the home minister said.
Chennithala said the government viewed all concerns and complaints regarding prisons seriously and would take steps to ensure transparent and foolproof security by addressing the shortcomings in the prison system.
