Malappuram (Kerala) | An inquiry has been launched after around eight sovereigns of gold ornaments, handed over by the public after being found misplaced, allegedly went missing from the Karipur police station here, officials said on Saturday.

According to police, a team led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police is conducting an inquiry following information received from the State Special Branch.

Police sources said the ornaments -- three gold chains, two earrings, a ring and a bracelet -- had been deposited at the police station for safekeeping after being found by the public, so they could be returned to their rightful owners.

The ornaments, some of which had been found misplaced by some passengers at Karipur airport, were kept in an almirah at the police station, officials said.

As part of the inquiry, CCTV footage from the station is being examined to ascertain whether the ornaments were stolen, they said.

Statements from police officials at the station have been recorded, officials said.

The DySP is expected to submit a report to the Malappuram District Police Chief soon.
