The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) registered the case early this month against Arun Mohan, who served as sub-inspector at Bekal, Melparamb and Vellarikkundu police stations in Kasaragod district during the period.

He allegedly misappropriated the money and used it for personal purposes, causing a loss of Rs 2,96,750 to the government, the FIR said.

VACB officials said the case was registered suo motu following information about malpractice in the challans issued by the police.

The case was registered under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Indian Penal Code, officials said.

VACB officials are conducting a detailed probe into the bank accounts of the officer and his relatives.

Statements of other police officers who worked at the stations where he served will also be recorded, officials added.

VACB Deputy Superintendent of Police V K Viswambharan is the complainant in the case, while Inspector Sreedasan M V has been assigned the investigation.
