Kozhikode (Kerala) | Kozhikode DCC president K Praveen Kumar on Monday alleged that AICC general secretary K C Venugopal was being targeted through an organised cyber campaign and sought a detailed investigation into the matter.
Addressing reporters here, the Congress MLA alleged that certain vested interests were deliberately dragging Venugopal's name into issues that had no connection with him in an attempt to tarnish his image.
"Venugopal's name is being dragged into issues that have absolutely no connection with him. In Kerala, it has reached a point where he is blamed even if an elephant runs amok or Argentina loses a FIFA World Cup final," he said in a sarcastic remark.
Claiming that there was a "racket" behind the cyber campaign, Kumar alleged that those involved were not Congress workers but were acting with vested interests.
He said Venugopal had played a key role in strengthening the Congress and contributing to the party's historic electoral successes in the Assembly elections, and alleged that the campaign was aimed at undermining those achievements and damaging his public image.
Kumar said he had submitted a complaint to Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala seeking an investigation into the alleged cyber campaign against the AICC general secretary.
The complaint listed details of certain social media accounts allegedly involved in the campaign, he said, adding that some of them were fake profiles using the Congress' name.
He urged the government to identify those behind the campaign, irrespective of their position, and bring them to justice through a comprehensive investigation.
According to a statement, Chennithala has directed an investigation into Kumar's complaint.
The complaint has been forwarded to the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), the statement said, adding that strict action has been ordered against those found responsible.
