Kochi | Congress leaders who were not included in the initial candidate list for the upcoming Assembly elections remain hopeful of being considered at the last minute by the party leadership.
Earlier, the party had announced 55 candidates, and the remaining candidates are likely to be announced soon.
Perumbavoor MLA Eldhose Kunnapilly, who visited New Delhi to meet senior leaders on Thursday, said he had conveyed his case and chances if given an opportunity.
Kunnapilly, who won from Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district in 2016 and 2021, was not initially considered after facing a sexual assault case.
Asked whether he was a victim of internal party politics, Kunnapilly said he did not see it that way.
"Even if we are living in a safe house, a landslide might occur, and nothing can be done. I could not see the landslide," he said.
On being asked who was behind the crisis, he said he was unaware and expressed hope that the party would stand by him.
"I feel I am safe. I will respond when the candidate list comes," he said.
He added that he had conveyed to the leadership his confidence of winning again from Perumbavoor.
"The party is considering me," he said.
Kunnapilly said he has been preparing for the elections for the past one year, including conducting house visits.
Meanwhile, another leader, Deepthi Mary Varghese, said she was ready to contest if the party leadership asked her to do so, and would otherwise continue organisational work.
"I am hopeful that there will be an announcement soon. Whatever the decision, the Congress will do well in Kochi constituencies," she said.
Mary, who was earlier considered for the Kochi mayor post after winning the local body election, said she does not feel sidelined despite not being chosen.
"I don't think I was sidelined at the party. Every time, everyone cannot contest elections. I am happy with the opportunities given," Mary said and added that she will be active in the poll campaign.
