Thiruvananthapuram | Senior Congress leader V M Sudheeran on Monday wrote to Chief Minister V D Satheesan seeking a fresh probe into the suicide death of former SNDP Yogam Kanichukulangara Union secretary K K Maheshan.
Maheshan was found hanging at the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam Union office in Kanichukulangara, Alappuzha in June 2020.
Police had registered a case naming SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan, his manager K L Asokan and son Thushar Vellappally as accused.
In a letter to the chief minister, Sudheeran forwarded a petition submitted by Maheshan's wife, Ushadevi, and sought urgent intervention in the matter.
He also shared the letter and the petition on his Facebook page.
Sudheeran alleged that despite several complaints seeking legal action against those responsible for Maheshan's death, no effective action had been taken so far.
He alleged that Maheshan was driven to take the extreme step due to mental harassment and threats from Natesan and others.
Sudheeran said a complaint had also been submitted to the CM on June 6, but no meaningful action appeared to have followed.
Expressing confidence that the present government would not adopt the same approach as the previous administration, he urged the chief minister to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising senior and honest police officers to investigate the case.
The Congress veteran also alleged that Natesan continued to make derogatory remarks against Maheshan even after his death and accused him of displaying disregard for the rule of law.
He said the government machinery, which is responsible for upholding the law, should act without further delay.
Sudheeran urged the chief minister to take prompt and effective action on the petition submitted by Ushadevi and ensure justice for the bereaved family.
The move came a day after Natesan alleged that Sudheeran was targeting him out of a long-standing grudge stemming from the latter's defeat in the 2004 Lok Sabha election in Alappuzha.
Natesan claimed that he had worked against Sudheeran in that election and that it had contributed to his defeat.
Rejecting the allegations against him as baseless, Natesan said the police had already conducted inquiries into the matter.
He said Maheshan came from a poor family and that he had helped him by providing employment and opportunities within the organisation.
