Thrissur(Kerala) | The Centre has sanctioned Rs 24 lakh as financial assistance to the troupes performing 'Pulikali', Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi said on Wednesday.
'Pulikali' is an art form where the artists who wear masks and stripes resembling a tiger dance like the big cat during the annual Onam celebrations in Kerala. Centre's move is seen as a big boost to the performers.
Gopi, the minister of state for Petroleum, Natural gas and Tourism, claimed that the funds had been delayed due to non-compliance with the guidelines and procedures by the state government.
In a social media post, he said that this time sanction was sought as a special case to ensure there is no hindrance to the cultural prestige of Thrissur and this art form.
Gopi said that the funds have now been fully sanctioned based on the official assurance and undertaking of the state government to follow strict norms in such projects in the future.
"Ministry of Tourism has approved Rs 24 Lakhs in Central Financial Assistance for Thrissur's Pulikali Sangams as a special relaxation, following an undertaking by the state government to strictly follow all guidelines moving forward," he said.
Along with the X post, he also shared a photo of the letter, dated July 27, sanctioning the funds.
In a Facebook post, Gopi said that the funds would help add colour to the art form during Onam and showcase Kerala's unique culture to the world.
"Pulikali is the pride of the cultural city and I am always with you to carry it in my heart," he said.
