Thiruvananthapuram | Kerala Police have registered a case against a person for posting on Facebook, allegedly spreading fake news targeting former Assembly Speaker V M Sudheeran, officials said on Friday.

The case was registered by the Thiruvananthapuram City Cyber Crime Police against the individual using the Facebook account under the name 'Mohammed Khaleel', they said.

Police booked the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including Sections 192 (wantonly giving provocation with an intent to cause a riot) and 336(3) (forgery for cheating) and various sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

An investigation into the incident is underway, police added in a statement.

Sudheeran had alleged that a Facebook post containing remarks about the chief minister attributed to him was being circulated and he asserted that he had never made those remarks on Facebook or any other platform.

He said the post was brought to his notice by Palakkad DCC General Secretary M Padmagireeshan.

Sudheeran alleged that the fake post was a "malicious attempt" to mislead the public by making it appear as though he had questioned the very legitimacy of the government and to create an atmosphere of hatred and provocation.

He also urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, identify those responsible for creating and circulating the fake post, and initiate appropriate legal action against them.
