Pakur (Jharkhand) | A couple who were allegedly engaged in an extramarital relationship were assaulted, garlanded with slippers and paraded in a “semi-naked” condition by residents of a village in Jharkhand's Pakur district, police said on Wednesday.

The two, both in their 20s and married, were also held hostage inside a house in Budhiduba village under Amrapada Police Station for the past few days.

The woman's husband, who works outside, somehow came to know about the affair and asked the villagers over the phone to raid his house, and the two were found inside on Friday night.

“The villagers took them out, assaulted them and paraded them with a garland of slippers in a semi-naked condition. They were held hostage at a villager’s house," Amrapada Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anup Roshan Bhengra said.

The officer said that it was only after videos and photographs of the incident went viral on social media that the police got the information and rescued the two on Monday.

“The woman has lodged an FIR against seven named accused and nearly two dozen unidentified people. We are raiding different villages to nab the named accused involved in the incident after lodging cases under various sections of the BNS and the Information Technology Act,” Bhengra added.

The man, a resident of a village in neighbouring Sahibganj district, and the woman were kept at the police station for their security, the officer said.

The police have set up a camp in Budhiduba village to maintain law and order.
