Kochi | A court has sentenced an accused in the 2007 Vagamon SIMI training camp case in Keralam to seven years of rigorous imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

The Special Court for National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases, Judge Hafees Mohammed, sentenced Abdul Subhan Qureshi of East Thane, Maharashtra.

Qureshi was sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment under Section 10(a) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), five years under Section 20 and another five years under Section 38 of the Act.

He was also sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act and seven years under Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code.

The court ordered that all substantive sentences run concurrently and allowed the period of imprisonment already undergone to be set off against the sentence.

It also imposed fines of Rs 25,000 each under Section 10(a) of the UAPA, Section 20 of the Act, and Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act.

The case against another accused, Wasiq Billa of Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, who remains at large, was ordered to be split and refiled separately.

According to the prosecution, 38 accused had conspired to organise training camps for cadres of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

As part of the alleged conspiracy, a training camp was held at Thangalpara in Vagamon from December 10 to 12, 2007.

The prosecution alleged that participants underwent training in firing, bomb-making and the use of explosives, besides motorbike racing and rock climbing.

Classes on jihad were also allegedly conducted at the camp.

Qureshi, who was arrested on May 7, 2018, was among those whose cases were separated after the trial of other accused.

He pleaded guilty to the charges on October 1, 2026, and the court accepted his plea as voluntary.

Earlier, the court had sentenced 18 other persons in the case in May 2018.
