Gwalior | Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone of the renovation and expansion plan for Gwalior railway station today. This Rs 534 crore scheme will transform the appearance and facilities of the station, making it a modern and facility-rich hub for travelers.
Gwalior railway station is a crucial station on the longest rail line from New Delhi to Mumbai and South India, serving many trains, including Rajdhani, Vande Bharat, Shatabdi, Duronto, Garib Rath, and other super-fast, express, and passenger trains. With around 170 trains stopping here currently, and many more starting from Gwalior, the expansion is necessary to accommodate the growing traffic.
The program was organized in the auditorium of Gwalior LNIPE in the presence of State Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar, MP Vivek Narayan Shejwalkar, and local public representatives. Gwalior railway station has a rich history, dating back to the Scindia dynasty in 1838. The station was renovated by the Scindia rulers in 1940, giving it a heritage look that still exists today.
The upgraded station will cover about 48,000 square meters and have six platforms, up from four, and include 21 escalators and 19 lifts for the convenience of passengers. A world-class waiting hall will be built, and facilities such as rainwater harvesting and solid waste management will be implemented. Skoda and BMS systems will be installed for electricity.
The expansion plan was initiated due to the ever-increasing traffic, and Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, local MP Vivek Shejwalkar, and other public representatives have been instrumental in its implementation. The station will be capable of handling 1.5 lakh passengers in 24 hours, and its image will be comparable to that of a modern airport.
