Indore | Six youths from Maharashtra and five from here got stuck in the centre of the Narmada near Nagar Ghat in Omkareshwar, after water was released from the dam. Mandhata police and tehsildar Uday Mandloi reached the spot and coordinated with the rescue operation to ensure that all the youths were safely evacuated. They were rescued by sailors and divers.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning when NHDC started turbines for power generation, causing a sudden increase in water level. Sirens were sent out to alert people taking bath in the river.
Mandhata police station in-charge Bisen said water was released daily by NHDC by running turbines for power generation. As a result, the water level rose to a certain limit. The youths did not pay attention to the sirens.
Collector Anoop Kumar Singh clarified that the water level gradually increased normally when the turbines were started and there was no sudden rise in water. No complaints had been lodged.
