One has to get prepared mentally and physically to adapt to unfamiliar weather and lifestyle before taking the flight to Europe
Be ready for all this to board a Europe flight

A flight to Europe now is akin to how Malayalis flew to the Gulf some decades ago. The number of Keralites travelling to Europe not just for work but also studies is now on the rise. It is an ideal situation as most European countries are facing an acute shortage of skilled workers and are on a recruitment spree, especially from abroad. But things aren’t that rosy. Those wanting to travel have to be wary of touts and not fall into traps of claims that language and education qualifications are no barriers for emigration and that too with family. Each country in that region has a set of emigration rules.

Even after surmounting such crises, the following tips will be very helpful:

  • Be mentally prepared to adapt yourself to the unfamiliar climate and lifestyle in Europe.

  • This is not just for those going on a work visa but also for students. For the latter, depending on households to meet daily expenses is not possible. It is common practice among students to take up part-time jobs as part of this. One should be willing to take up any work, like those in a hotel, cleaning jobs and taking care of children. Daily household chores like cooking and laundry will have to be done to survive in European conditions.

  • Unlike in India where hospital services are easily available, the case is not so in most European countries. In most places, a doctor's appointment for minor ailments is not available. Those not in the habit of buying antibiotics for treating even a cold or flu should be prepared to cope with these conditions there.

  • One should not go by the belief that knowledge of English can help one survive across Europe because that is not the official language or mother tongue of people in several countries in the region. So. learning the local language is important as communication with the government or local people will be near impossible.

  • It will be disappointing for those who think that they can bring their family as soon as they reach their destination. The visa process for dependents is cumbersome and can get delayed. Moreover, the high cost of living can be a big barrier.

European countries are not like those in the Gulf which Keralites are quite familiar with. Keralites are generally accustomed to leading a solitary life and being with the family on a weekend, if needed. But this is not so in Europe which will also mean that anyone venturing to make a living in Europe should be willing to face necessary risks and hardships.
