Jamnagar, Gujarat | In a major step towards wildlife conservation, Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (GZRRC), an affiliate of Vantara, has partnered with the Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots (ACTP) to reintroduce 41 Spix’s macaws (Cyanopsitta spixii) to Brazil’s Caatinga biome. Declared extinct in the wild in 2000, these rare birds were transported from ACTP’s breeding centre in Berlin to a release centre in Bahia, Brazil, on January 28.
This initiative builds on earlier successes, including the reintroduction of 20 Spix’s macaws in 2022, which led to the first wild-born chicks in over two decades. Vantara has provided expert support and critical resources to ACTP, reaffirming its dedication to global biodiversity restoration.
ACTP founder Martin Guth expressed gratitude to Vantara and its key supporter, Anant Ambani, for their invaluable contributions to the project. With annual releases planned, the programme aims to establish a thriving wild population of Spix’s macaws, marking a significant milestone in species recovery efforts.
