Los Angeles| Streaming service Netflix has released the official trailer for the fourth season of its political drama series "The Diplomat", which will premiere on October 15.
The new season will continue to follow US Ambassador Kate Wyler, played by Keri Russell, and her husband, Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), as their professional and personal lives become increasingly entangled.
The trailer hints at fresh political conspiracies and further strain in the couple's marriage, with Kate facing the possibility that she has been double-crossed by Hal and US President Grace Penn (Allison Janney), Netflix said in a statement.
Season three ended with Kate and Hal's marriage seemingly moving towards reconciliation before Kate began to suspect that her husband and Grace had kept her in the dark about their plans.
Series creator, showrunner and executive producer Debora Cahn said the fourth season centres on Kate, Hal and Grace as well as First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford).
"This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd," Cahn told Netflix's fan website Tudum. "They're two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster. Each of them has a professional, public role that's upending their ability to function as a married person." According to the official synopsis, a catastrophic event shatters the fragile peace Kate had brokered between the US and UK while further destabilising her marriage.
"As Kate attempts to contain the fallout, a conspiracy involving Grace and Hal to steal Russia's most powerful weapon threatens to push the United States towards war. Kate and Todd are forced to work together to prevent the alliance between Grace and Hal from disrupting the balance of power both at home and abroad," it added.
"The Diplomat" follows Kate, a career diplomat who is appointed US ambassador to the UK, as she navigates international crises while dealing with a complicated marriage to Hal, a political operator and diplomat.
The series received seven nominations at the 2026 Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nods for Russell, Sewell, Janney and Whitford.
Janney went on to win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, earning her eighth Emmy and tying the record for most acting Emmy wins.
