IUML denies differences in UDF, says decisions taken after consultations with allies

IUML on Friday denied any differences within the ruling UDF, asserting that government decisions were being taken after consultations with alliance partners and that there was no major issue within the Front.

Malappuram (Keralam) | IUML on Friday denied any differences within the ruling UDF, asserting that government decisions were being taken after consultations with alliance partners and that there was no major issue within the Front.

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) state president Syyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal and Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty were responding to recent criticism by UDF convenor Adoor Prakash that key government decisions were being taken without consulting alliance partners.

Thangal said all UDF decisions were taken after discussions among the constituents and that the League wants to maintain the unity of the alliance.

"Whenever the UDF takes a decision, it is done after discussions with everyone. The League wants the unity of the UDF to remain intact. Decisions in accordance with that unity have always been taken by the UDF," he told reporters.

He said differences of opinion, if any, could be resolved through discussions and asserted that there are no serious differences within the Front or among its constituent parties.

"All these matters will be resolved. There is nothing to worry about," he said.

Thangal also said discussions and consultations were held with him and other leaders whenever they were in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kunhalikutty said several bilateral discussions had taken place among alliance partners following a UDF meeting and that some decisions on appointments to boards and corporations has already been finalised.

"One decision has been taken, and several more are yet to be finalised. These include appointments involving constituent parties, senior leaders and political parties. The decision already taken was based on a UDF meeting and subsequent bilateral discussions," he said.

He said the remaining issues would also be resolved through consultations and that there are no problems of the magnitude being projected.

When asked about Prakash's remarks, Kunhalikutty declined to comment.

He said decisions on appointments, including that of Forward Bloc leader G Devarajan as Keralam's special representative in New Delhi and IUML leader M K Muneer as chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission, had been taken through discussions and that more decisions were expected.

"Everyone's complaints will be resolved," he said.

Asked whether a UDF meeting would be held soon, Kunhalikutty said it would take place once a date was fixed.

"There is no Himalayan problem as you imagine," he said, urging the media not to overlook the broader opposition unity against the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll at the national level.

He said leaders, including those from the Congress and CPI(M), had participated in discussions and protests on the issue.

Thangal said the IUML had convened a meeting of its MLAs and MPs on October 3, with the notice issued a month earlier.

He said the meeting was part of the party's regular exercise to review developments, discuss development-related matters and hear the views of elected representatives.
