Car plunges into gorge in Nainital; 2 UP tourists dead

Two men died and two others sustained serious injuries on Saturday after their car plunged into a gorge in Uttarakhand's Nainital district, police said.

According to the police, all four tourists travelling in the car were residents of Uttar Pradesh.

The accident occurred around 8:30 am near Khupi on the Jeolikot-Bhowali road when the car en route to Jageshwar Dham suddenly plummeted into a 300-meter-deep gorge after its driver lost control of the vehicle.

Upon hearing the sound of the vehicle falling, locals rushed to the scene and immediately alerted the police, they said.

Subsequently, the police force, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and fire department teams reached the spot and launched a rescue operation.

The police said that all four occupants were extricated from the gorge; two of them died on the spot.

The deceased have been identified as Ankit Chaudhary and Abhiraj, both residents of Unnao.

Police added that, given the critical condition of the injured -- Atul Dubey and Shyam -- they were transferred to a hospital in Haldwani after receiving preliminary medical aid.

The police are investigating the causes of the accident, they said.
