Three people have been arrested in connection with an alleged religious conversion case in the Kotwali area here, police said on Tuesday.

Maharajganj (UP) | Three people have been arrested in connection with an alleged religious conversion case in the Kotwali area here, police said on Tuesday.

The arrests were made from Pipardeurwa village after police received information about alleged religious conversion-related activities and launched a probe.

Based on a complaint and evidence collected during the investigation, an FIR was registered under Sections 3 and 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act at Kotwali police station.

The accused -- Saroj Kumar, 40, Saroj Devi, 36, both residents of Pipardeurwa village, and Priyanka, 35, a resident of Turkdiha village in neighbouring Kushinagar district -- were arrested on Monday and produced before a local court, police said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Siddharth said the trio was arrested on the basis of evidence collected during the investigation, and the seized material has been taken into custody for further probe.

Police said they recovered three religious books, eight copies of the Bible, 145 pamphlets, and around Rs 10,000 in cash.
