Monsoon transforms the Konkan region into a landscape of remarkable natural beauty, it also brings significant operational challenges due to heavy rainfall and difficult terrain. Keeping passenger safety and uninterrupted train operations as its highest priorities, Konkan Railway has undertaken extensive monsoon preparedness measures across its network.
As part of its proactive approach, Konkan Railway has implemented a comprehensive monsoon preparedness plan focused on infrastructure strengthening, geo-safety measures, real-time monitoring systems, intensified patrolling, and emergency response preparedness to ensure safe and reliable train operations. With continuous advancements in geo-safety and monitoring systems, Konkan Railway remains fully prepared to meet the challenges of the monsoon season. The Monsoon Timetable will be in effect from 15th June to 20th October 2026, with sectional speed restrictions implemented across the route to ensure safe and reliable train operations during the monsoon season.
Key Preparedness for Monsoons 2026
Flattening of cutting slopes and soil nailing have been undertaken at identified locations to improve slope stability.
Rock bolting and shotcreting works in Tunnels and Cuttings to strengthen geological formations and prevent rockfalls.
Protective structures such as Gabion walls, Retaining walls, Micropiles and Boulder Netting have been installed to mitigate geotechnical risks.
Cleaning and concrete lining of Side drains and Catchwater drains have been completed to facilitate effective monsoon drainage.
Ongoing and completed Geo-safety works have substantially reduced the incidence of Boulder falls and Soil slippages across the route.
Portable dewatering pumps deployed at vulnerable locations.
As a result of these sustained efforts, Konkan Railway has not experienced any major disruption due to boulder falls during the monsoon season in the past decade.
Monsoon Patrolling and Surveillance
657 trained personnel are being deployed for round-the-clock patrolling at identified locations.
Strategic placement of BRN (wagons) mounted excavators at Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavali and Verna for rapid response during emergencies.
Rail Maintenance Vehicles (RMVs) are stationed at 9 key locations: (Veer, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Rajapur Road, Kudal, Verna, Karwar, Bhatkal and Udupi)
Tower Wagons are kept ready at Mangaon, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavali, Karmali, Karwar, and Udupi for immediate action.
Loco Pilots are instructed to restrict train speed to 40 kmph during low visibility and stop trains if water levels exceed 100 mm above rail level. Train services will be temporarily suspended and resumed only after water levels recede to ensure passenger safety.
Accident Relief Medical Equipment (ARME scale-II) with fully equipped medical Kits / Tools at key locations: (Mangoan, Diwankhavati, Chiplun, Sangameshwar Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Kudal, Madgaon Jn., Canacona, Karwar, Bhatkal and Udupi)
Self-Propelled Accident Relief Medical Vans (ARMVs) with operation theatres and emergency medical aid are stationed at Ratnagiri and Verna.
The Accident Relief Train (ART) is stationed at Verna, ready to mobilize within 15 minutes.
JCBs, Poclains, and Dumpers are available through local agencies for emergency response during the monsoon.
Loaded Ballast trains positioned for quick emergency response.
Safety personnel are equipped with Mobile Phones for emergency communication with the Control office / Station.
Loco Pilots and Train Managers are equipped with walkie-talkies, while 25-Watt VHF sets at all stations ensure seamless communication during train operations.
Emergency Communication Sockets (EMCs) are installed at 1 km intervals along the route and at every 400m in tunnels exceeding 2 km in length to ensure swift communication with Control Offices during emergencies.
ARTs and ARMVs are equipped with Satellite Phones for reliable emergency communication.
Self-recording rain gauges are active at 9 stations viz. (Mangaon, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Vilwade, Kankavali, Madgaon, Karwar, Bhatkal and Udupi) to monitor and alert officials about rainfall levels.
Flood warning systems are functional at key bridges i.e Ghod river (between Indapur & Mangaon) Kali river (between Mangaon & Goregaon), Savitri river (between Veer & Sape Wamane) and Vashishti river (between Chiplun & Kamathe) to alert officials if water levels reach dangerous levels.
Anemometers have been installed on Major Viaducts and Bridges at 04 locations Panval Viaduct (between Ratnagiri & Nivasar), Mandovi Bridge (between Thivim & Karmali), Zuari Bridge (between Karmali & Verna) and Sharavati Bridge (between Honnavar & Manki) to continuously monitor wind velocity.
24/7 Control Rooms are operational in Belapur, Ratnagiri, and Madgaon throughout the monsoon season.
CCTV surveillance at all 72 stations is monitored through Station Master offices and 9 RPF posts across the route.
KRCL coordinates closely with India Meteorological Department (IMD) for daily weather updates and issues SMS alerts to field officials based on weather forecasts.
Medical teams are positioned at Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Verna, Madgaon, Karwar and Udupi to respond in emergencies. First Aid Boxes stocked with essential and emergency medicines are available in the pantry cars of all Konkan Railway trains.
