It's no more All India Radio!

That famous and nostalgic announcement will no longer be heard. The rechristening had been in the air since 1997.

That famous and nostalgic announcement will no longer be heard. The rechristening had been in the air since 1997.

'This is All India Radio...'

This announcement can ring tones of nostalgia to even kids of the 90s. For many a generation, this lasting sound was even a clock that announced the morning wake-up alarm. But from now on, it will be only Akashavani.
Akashvani under Prasar Bharati is one of the largest radio networks in the world. The name Akashvani was first used in 1956 by none other than Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as it literally means "voice from the sky". However, as a colonial era hangover, 'All India Radio' was also being used simultaneously since it was named thus in 1936 by the then British Government.
The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory to put an end to this. The proposal to omit the English name has actually been under consideration since 1997 and has now been finally implemented.
