"This isn't just a tunnel; it's a 100-year guarantee of safety and economic transformation. We are looking at a massive surge in tourism—from the current 3 lakh seasonal visitors to over 7 to 8 lakh tourists annually. Families will no longer be trapped by winter."
Beyond Kuthiran: A Gold Standard in Mountain Safety
India has had a mixed record with mountain tunnels. Kerala's Kuthiran Tunnel on the Thrissur-Palakkad stretch, despite its operational convenience, suffered from years of procedural delays, structural seepage concerns, and inadequate early-stage ventilation planning. Similarly, proposed long-distance tunnels connecting Kozhikode to Wayanad face intense scrutiny over fragile Western Ghats ecology and emergency evacuation protocols.
Zojila, however, sets a whole new benchmark. Engineered using the modern New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), it is fortified with top-tier international safety standards. It has fully automated fire detection and suppression cabinets placed every 125 meters. There are pedestrian cross-passages motorable cross-passages according to international standards.
