Keralite couple, 19-year-old daughter end lives in Pune; suicide note cites financial stress

Pune | A couple and their 19-year-old daughter allegedly committed suicide in Pimpri Chinchwad area of Pune district, a police official said on Sunday.

While Vinod Pillai (50) died on Saturday, his wife Srija Pillai (45) and their teen daughter Purnima Pillai were pronounced dead by doctors on Sunday, he said.

"The incident took place in Morwadi here. The family is originally from Kerala and were living in Pimpri for the past three years. A suicide note has been recovered, which cited financial stress. It also said no one should be blamed for their extreme step," the official said.

The incident came to light after Srija, who is a coordinator at a school in Morwadi, did not report to work and did not respond to calls made by her colleagues inquiring about her absence, he said.

"These colleagues then called her relatives, who too tried contacting her but in vain. Some of their kin living close by went to the Pillai household and found the door open. The three were lying unconscious inside, after which police was alerted," the official said.

The three were rushed to a hospital soon after, where Vinod died on Saturday, and Srija and Purnima on Sunday, he said.

Further probe into the case is underway, the official said.
