Thiruvananthapuram | The SIT probing the alleged assault on Youth Congress workers by security personnel of then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during the Nava Kerala Sadas programme in Alappuzha conducted a search at the office of the ADGP here on Thursday, officials said.
The Special Investigation Team, led by SP A P Shoukathali, visited the ADGP (Law and Order) office and collected records, besides examining CCTV footage as part of the investigation, police sources said.
Officials said the SIT had earlier reached the office on Wednesday as part of the preliminary inquiry and returned on Thursday to complete the verification process.
The case pertains to a 2023 incident in which two Youth Congress activists, including current Alappuzha MLA A D Thomas, were allegedly assaulted by police personnel attached to the CM’s security team while protesting against the Nava Kerala Sadas programme.
Following the incident, an investigation was launched against five police personnel who were part of the security team.
After the UDF government assumed office, the SIT was constituted to conduct a detailed probe into the incident.
During the investigation, the SIT received information suggesting that then ADGP (Law and Order) M R Ajith Kumar had allegedly interfered with the probe, sources said.
According to police sources, Kumar allegedly summoned the investigating officer and members of the team to his office and altered the case diary.
After the change in government, five police personnel were suspended and offences, including attempt to murder, were invoked against them. However, they secured anticipatory bail from the Alappuzha District Sessions Court, which is now being challenged by the SIT before the Kerala High Court.
Sources said the SIT is also examining Kumar’s alleged role in detail.
Kumar is currently serving as Chairman and Managing Director of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation.
