Woman, two-year-old son found dead in river

Police have launched an investigation after the bodies of a woman and her two-year-old son were found floating in the Muvattupuzha river at Piravom

Kochi | Police have launched an investigation after the bodies of a woman and her two-year-old son were found floating in the Muvattupuzha river at Piravom near here, officials said on Saturday.

The bodies were spotted in the river at around 2 pm on Friday.

Police identified the deceased as Viji (35), a native of Muvattupuzha, and her two-year-old son.

Following the recovery of the bodies, police tried to contact Viji's husband, Narayanan, but were unsuccessful.

According to police, Viji was visually impaired and the couple had two children. Narayanan, a native of Palakkad, was living with the family in a rented house at Kothamangalam.

Police said the family had recently been seen in the Piravom area, but relatives have no information about the whereabouts of Narayanan and the couple's elder child.

Officials said the initial investigation points to a suspected case of suicide, but the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination.

Efforts are underway to trace Narayanan and the elder child with the assistance of the cyber cell, police said.

Statements of relatives and others close to the family have been recorded.

Piravom police have registered a case and are continuing the investigation.

The bodies will be handed over to the relatives after the post-mortem.
