UDF, LDF accuse each other in Assembly over YC-SFI clash at Kerala University hostel

The UDF and LDF traded accusations regarding the Youth Congress-SFI clash at the Kerala University hostel here last month, with both fronts blaming the other for the incident

Thiruvananthapuram | The ruling Congress-led UDF and the CPI(M)-headed LDF opposition on Monday traded accusations regarding the Youth Congress-SFI clash at the Kerala University hostel here last month, with both fronts blaming the other for the incident.

The accusations were traded following a notice moved by the LDF MLAs V Joy and K Rajan seeking adjournment of the House proceedings to discuss the issue.

Assembly Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan denied permission to the notice after state Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said that Youth Congress (YC) activists had on September 30 organised a night march demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

When the YC activists reached near the hostel, activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) hooted at them, threw stones and beer bottles at the protestors, leading to a clash between the two sides forcing the police to intervene.

Chennithala said that several cases were registered in connection with the incident against around 75 activists, each of the SFI and YC, and four people have been arrested during the investigation of the matter.

"Police officers were injured in the incident and police property, including batons, was damaged," he said.

Chennithala also said that the police were the same as the one that existed during the time of the previous LDF government and the current UDF administration has not given the force any special training after coming to power in May this year.

The minister also accused Joy and former MLA Kadakampally Surendran of making death threats against officers of Cantonment police station.

He also said that complaints of an officer of the Cantonment police station putting up threatening Facebook posts against SFI activists was being looked into and such acts were "unacceptable".

At the same time, he said that marches to the homes of police officers by SFI activists were also "unacceptable".

Responding to the contentions by Chennithala, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Pinarayi Vijayan questioned why strict action was not taken against Yuva Morcha activists who blocked ministers' vehicles and said it indicates a soft approach towards the Sangh Parivar.

He as well as Joy alleged that the hooting was heard from the hostel because of a power cut at that time, but in response, YC activists threw flaming torches and beer bottles inside the premises.

They further alleged that the police intervened in the matter to unleash brutal assault on the SFI activists and said that such acts were condemnable.

"Such things should not happen in Keralam. It is incorrect. We are walking out over denial of permission to the notice," Vijayan said.

While presenting the notice, Joy also showed in the House a police baton, claiming it was used to beat the SFI activists.

The baton was later taken into custody of the House on the directions of the Speaker.

Joy also denied that he made any death threats to any officer, claiming that he only said that such brutality by the police will result in a death.
