Two teenagers drowned in a river at Marayoor here on Friday, officials said.

The deceased were identified as Sanjith Kumar alias Senthil (15) of GM Puram in Idukki and Balamurughan (14) of Keezhanthur in the district.

Officials at the Munnar Fire and Rescue Service station said three teenagers had reached the Kovilkadavu area at around 4.30 pm.

Of them, Senthil and Balamurughan entered the river to take a bath.

However, they ventured into a deeper portion of the river and drowned, officials said.

Hearing the cries of their friend seeking help, local residents rushed to the spot and attempted a rescue.

Fire and Rescue Service personnel later reached the place and recovered the bodies at around 5.30 pm, officials said.

Marayoor police have started an investigation into the incident.

The bodies were shifted to a hospital in Munnar and will be handed over to relatives after the postmortem on Saturday, police said.
