Two killed in car-lorry collision in Kerala

Two people were killed after the car in which they were travelling collided with a lorry at Kalanjoor here on Sunday, police said.

The deceased were identified as Sundar Raj and his daughter Janani, natives of Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu.

According to police, Janani's husband Pranav, who was driving the car, and her brother Shivasankar sustained serious injuries and were shifted to a medical college hospital.

Two persons travelling in the lorry also suffered injuries and were admitted to a private hospital.

Officials at Koodal police station said Jenani and her family were travelling from Aluva in Ernakulam district to Sivakasi when the accident occurred.

The lorry, carrying hay, was travelling from Tenkasi towards Pathanamthitta.

The accident took place near Valiyapally at around 4.35 am and, following the impact, the lorry plunged into a canal, officials said.

Police and local residents launched rescue operations, which were later joined by Fire and Rescue Services personnel.

Though Jenani and Sundar Raj were rushed to a nearby hospital, they succumbed to their injuries.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining CCTV footage from shops near the accident site.

Efforts are also underway to recover the lorry from the canal using cranes, officials said.

A case has been registered.
