Rescue attempt underway after Bison falls into well in Keralam

Forest officials have launched efforts to rescue a bison that fell into a well at a house in Maruthonkara here, officials said on Saturday.

Kozhikode (Keralam) | Forest officials have launched efforts to rescue a bison that fell into a well at a house in Maruthonkara here, officials said on Saturday.

According to officials at the Kuttiday Forest Office, the bison was found trapped in a well at Bijoy's house in Mullankunnu, Maruthonkara, on Friday morning.

Forest officials initially attempted to create a slope by breaking a section of the well's sidewall to help the animal climb out. However, the attempt was halted following protests by local residents, officials said.

The residents expressed concern that the rescued bison could roam the area, posing a threat to their lives and damaging crops.

Following the protests, forest officials said they would adopt alternative methods to rescue the animal and release it into the wild.

Officials are considering using a tranquilliser before lifting the animal out of the well.

However, a decision will be taken after consulting forest veterinary doctors, as the bison is currently standing in water and the use of a tranquilliser could endanger its life.

Forest officials said they aim to complete the rescue operation on Saturday, as the animal has been trapped in the well for an extended period.
