Thiruvananthapuram | A police officer sustained serious head injuries after he was allegedly hit with a helmet by a man during Onam celebrations on Manaveeyam Road here, officials on Monday said.

The Museum Police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the accused, who was taken into custody, they said.

The incident occurred around 11.45 pm on Sunday when Sreejith S R (32), a police officer deployed on duty in connection with the Onam week celebrations, and his colleagues asked a group allegedly creating a nuisance on Manaveeyam Road to disperse.

According to police, the accused, a man aged around 25, allegedly approached Sreejith after being asked to leave, verbally abused him and hit him on the back of his head with a helmet.

The officer sustained a deep head injury and was admitted to the Medical College Hospital for treatment, police said.

His statement was recorded at the hospital on Monday morning, following which the Museum Police registered a case, officials said.

The accused has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those pertaining to obscene words or acts, voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means, voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty and attempt to murder, police said.
