Kochi (Kerala) | The UDF government on Friday expressed confidence that the long-pending land dispute at Pariyathukavu in Ernakulam district will be resolved before June 16, the deadline set by the Kerala High Court.

Seven Dalit families are facing eviction in Pariathukavu near Kizhakkambalam following a court verdict.

The state government has said it will not be left homeless and has promised alternative land and housing.

After holding discussions with the parties involved, Higher Education Minister Roji M John said the government is trying to arrive at a practical solution acceptable to both sides.

He said the interests of all parties will be protected while finalising any decision.

According to officials, the family of Sankaran Nair has agreed in principle to provide five cents of land each to the residents of Pariathukavu at a nearby location, away from the disputed property.

The court order is in their favour.

However, the government has suggested that the residents be given five cents of land along with proper access roads within the disputed area itself.

Both sides have sought time to consult their family members before making a final decision.

The minister said the government is hopeful of reaching an agreement before the High Court deadline of June 16, after discussions with both parties.

A meeting in this regard was held in the district collector’s chamber.

It was attended by MLA V P Sajeendran, District Collector G Priyanka, and Ernakulam Rural District Police Chief K S Sudarshan, among others.

The Pariyathukavu case relates to a long-standing land dispute near Kizhakkambalam, where Dalit families have been residing for decades on land claimed by private parties.

A court has ordered their eviction based on ownership claims, triggering demands for rehabilitation and political debate on the issue.
