Thiruvananthapuram | The Traffic and Road Safety Management wing of Keralam Police has collected Rs 1.08 crore in fines from 32,385 vehicles for traffic violations, mainly illegal parking, during a statewide seven-day inspection, police said.

The special inspection was conducted from September 9 to 15 with the aim of improving road safety, reducing traffic congestion and preventing accidents.

Of the violations detected, 8,764 were on state highways, 8,441 on national highways and 15,180 on other roads, police said.

The inspections focused on accident-prone areas, roads with heavy traffic, major junctions and service roads.

Police said illegal parking not only contributed to traffic congestion but could also delay the transportation of accident victims to hospitals for emergency treatment, particularly on national highways.

The Traffic and Road Safety Management wing has directed highway patrol units across the state to conduct continuous inspections and take stringent action against repeat offenders, police said.

The inspections were carried out under the supervision of the SPs of the Traffic North and South zones and in coordination with district traffic nodal officers, based on directions from the Inspector General of Police, Traffic and Road Safety Management.
