Kannur (Kerala) | CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby on Saturday said there is no electoral pact between the party and the SDPI.
Responding to allegations by UDF leaders that the CPI(M) has entered into an understanding with the SDPI in several constituencies, Baby told a press conference that no such arrangement exists.
"The CPI(M) is of the view that the political approach of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) does not align with democratic politics. Such organisations should correct their stand by adopting democratic methods," he said.
Referring to the Jamaat-e-Islami, he described it as having a religious nationalist orientation.
"If they do not follow such a line, they should declare it and propagate it. That is our position on them," Baby said.
He said the LDF works with its constituent parties and other political entities that have openly declared support to the front.
Baby noted that the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has announced its support to the LDF and said it was the party's prerogative to take such a decision.
"The PDP maintains that the LDF is favourable to minorities. We have our own view on which parties are communal," he said.
He added that PDP leader Abdul Nazer Madani had earlier taken a communal stand but later corrected it.
"Madani has stated that, based on his experience of being implicated in cases due to political vendetta, he has given up earlier positions and now engages only in democratic practices. That change is reflected in the approach of both Madani and the PDP," Baby said.
He also referred to statements by some rebel CPI(M) leaders, including G Sudhakaran, alleging that they point towards an understanding between the Congress and the BJP.
Baby said that the overwhelming majority of CPI(M) supporters remain committed to strengthening the party.
"Only three or four individuals have left, and there are no followers for them. They left in pursuit of posts and positions. This is a party of martyrs that does not depend on such considerations," he said.
CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam said the LDF does not seek votes of the RSS.
"We do not want the votes of those who target minorities and oppose secular values," he said.
He alleged that the real understanding in Kerala is between the Congress and the BJP.
"Forgetting Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, the Congress in Kerala has become an intimate ally of the BJP," he said.
The Assembly elections in Kerala will be held on April 9.
