Police on Monday said they had registered a case after a mobile phone was found inside Kannur Central Prison

Kannur (Keralam) | Police on Monday said they had registered a case after a mobile phone was found inside Kannur Central Prison.

Kannur Town Police registered the case based on a complaint filed by the prison department's joint superintendent on Sunday, they said.

According to police, the phone was found abandoned behind Cell No: 6 in the prison's CD Block during a routine inspection.

The device has a keypad and does not contain a SIM card, police said.

An investigation is underway to identify the prisoner who had been using the phone. The device will be handed over to the cyber cell for a detailed probe using its IMEI number, they added.

The prison department has intensified inspections amid repeated recoveries of mobile phones and drugs from Kannur Central Prison.

Recently, the department announced plans to deploy artificial intelligence technology and drones to strengthen security at prisons across Keralam.
