Pathanamthitta (Kerala) | A mahout died after being attacked by an elephant at the Forest Department's elephant camp in Konni here on Saturday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Mohanan Nair (62) of Konni.

According to police, Nair was attacked by an elephant named Priyadarshini at around 3.30 pm.

Nair was the handler of another elephant named Meena.

As the mahout handling Priyadarshini was not present, Nair was assigned to take care of the elephant, officials said.

While feeding the elephant, Nair noticed a minor injury on its trunk.

He was attacked by the elephant while checking the injury, officials said.

Nair was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to injuries, police said.

Konni police have registered a case of unnatural death and started an investigation.

The body will be handed over to relatives after postmortem, police added.
