Keralam local bodies to set up information centres, QR code facilities for Sabarimala pilgrims

Local self-government institutions and district administrations in Keralam are gearing up to provide safe and convenient facilities for pilgrims ahead of the annual Sabarimala Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrim season, LSGD Minister K M Shaji said on Saturday.

Thiruvananthapuram | Local self-government institutions and district administrations in Keralam are gearing up to provide safe and convenient facilities for pilgrims ahead of the annual Sabarimala Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrim season, LSGD Minister K M Shaji said on Saturday.

In a Facebook post, Shaji said the department is planning to transform rest centres along pilgrimage routes into information centres that provide details on distances to various destinations, transport facilities, emergency helpline numbers, nearby hospitals, and eateries.

He said that arrangements are being considered to introduce QR code facilities at all rest centres, enabling pilgrims to submit complaints and suggestions and access emergency services.

Installing adequate charging points at each centre is also being considered, he said.

The department would hold discussions with service providers to offer free internet facilities at rest centres and along pilgrimage routes, the minister said.

Local bodies have been given strict instructions to ensure drinking water supply, street lighting and proper waste management, he said.

The Local Self Government Department (LSGD) would also ensure that public toilets and 'Take a Break' centres along the pilgrimage routes were fully operational ahead of the festival, Shaji added.

The annual Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season commences on November 16.
